So you hear from a friend that acne is caused by the consumption of chocolate and greasy foods. Makes sense right? Isn't it true that all to often the things that taste best are the culprits of bad effects on the human system? Wrong. Acne isn't caused by these foods. Read on to learn 5 other myths about acne so you can better protect yourself against it.
Myth #1
If I wash my face more, I will have less breakouts. Ironically, too much washing of the face or too abrasive cleaning will result in inflammation which leads to acne breakouts. It is necessary to cleanse the skin but it should be done gently and effectively. Most recommendations for skin cleaning include washing the face 2 times a day. Do so with a mild cleanser and gentle circular motion on the face.
Myth #2
Popping a pimple will get rid of it faster. This may prove to be a temporary fix but the overall effect is most likely increased irritation, spread of bacteria, and acne scars. Going against the body's natural system is risky and results in more swelling and redness around acne.
Myth #3
If breakouts still occur when using acne medication, increasing the amount applied will stop the breakouts. Unfortunately most acne creams, ointments, and medications create dryness and other irritation alongside their intended effect. Increasing the recommended amount for acne often leads to over drying, irritation, and more breakouts. If a product isn't working, stop using it and check with your doctor.
Myth #4
Stress causes acne. Stress can contribute to bodily processes and modify them as seen with hormones. The important thing to remember is that it is never the direct cause. If you are concerned about stress causing your acne, focus your energy on a treatment that works for you. Stress is part of life and your best bet is to learn how to manage it.
Myth #5
Increased sun exposure will reduce acne breakouts. This is simply not true. If anything it will further irritate the skin with sunburns and dryness. Remember that irritation is the worst for the skin, acting as a gateway for acne in all its forms.
Hooray, Myths Averted!!! So, among other things, you know that eating chocolate won't create acne for you. The 5 myths listed above are commonly mentioned but only perpetuate misunderstandings about acne. Now with the knowledge of them, you can better fight yours and share the information with your friends and family.
